There are few foods as widely popular as burgers.
Whether it’s the beloved cheeseburger, the humble hamburger, the ever popular fried chicken burger or a beast-burger the size of your head, burgers are a simple staple. The Australian home of food, Melbourne, is up to its ears in burgers, so we thought we’d simplify and shortlist our Top 10 burgers. How sweet of us.
Balwyn Canteen’s Instagram bio reads ‘Just your local ‘hole in the wall’ making big time BURGERS, DONUTS, THICK SHAKES and COFFEE.’ And they would be correct. Our pick of the lot (and there’s a lot) would have to be the Twister, with double fried chicken, lettuce, onion, tomato and ranch sauce on a house made brioche bun.
Between 2 Buns
If you head onto the Between 2 Buns website you’ll be confronted with the saying ‘Skinny people are easier to kidnap… Eat a burger’. Naturally we complied – smart people. Do yourself a favour and try literally every burger on the menu. Our pick of the day would be the Farmyard.
Located in the heart of thriving St Kilda, Fat Jaks is a ‘burger bar’ offering delicious American style comfort food made from local Australian produce. There are 14 burgers to choose from, which mean 14 reasons to visit (and that’s just the burgers). Fat Jaks also offers a burger of the month, not to be missed.
Get this, Tally is a holistic health club, and Tally Kitchen is their workout fuelling restaurant. Phat Pizza Burger Bar
Focusing on the simple things, Phat Pizza Burger Bar has been designed to serve fast food for fast people. If you’re after a burger to satisfy all those burger cravings but without the sick feeling after – this is it.
While from the front it doesn’t look like much, Beats Burgers in Essendon is a hidden, and priceless, gem. The menu is influenced by famous musicians and let’s be honest, it’s a difficult choice. We’d recommend the Notorious P.I.G (pictured) or the Chickney Houston – because how could we not?
Nostimo & Co
If beautiful burgers are your thing, we’ve got you. Nostimo. & Co serves up monstrous stacks, with generous amounts of oozing cheese and sauce. The owner is Greek, so be prepared for American style burgers with a Greek twist – sounds weird but trust us.
If we could simply add to this list based on cool names, Humdinger would be at the top. Self-proclaimed ‘dude food’, Humdinger is all about using your hands, licking your fingers and smashing into their seriously good burgers. There are 17 burgers to get through; needless to say you’ll be back more than once.
Friend of Ours
Friends of Ours has been open since 2012, so they’ve had time to get it right – and boy have they nailed that. The menu is fresh, only using the best produce and the burgers are bordering on insane. Their American burger cannot be missed – with two homemade beef patties, bacon, cheese and a fried egg – you’d be mad not to.
We’re going to finish off with something a little bit different – sliders. The Southern Fried Chicken sliders deserve to be here – think piles of southern fried chicken heaped into wholegrain buns with aioli and tangy slaw. If you’re after big burger, do the Smoked Brisket Burger – you’ll have zero regrets.
