The laundry – one of the hardest working rooms of your home, has been neglected for too long.

We overload the humble laundry with dirty clothing, stashed mops, scrubbing brushes and buckets. And, to top it off, we can all admit to accidentally spilling dreaded bleach all over it, which, of course, aggressively splashes onto a favourite clothing item. All this little room witnesses is the sound of shuffling steps burdened by heavy hampers, a variety of profanities and bursts of wishful thinking “no one will notice this stain, right?”

Until now.

If staying at home has taught us anything, it’s that the laundry is a vital organ of our home, and we should take better care of it. Better yet, thanks to the interior design gurus at Three Birds Renovations, we’ve got five fantastic tips to luxe up your laundry room.

But the design tips do come with a warning: “Don’t get carried away with beauty at the expense of functionality. Make sure you’ve included all the laundry essentials first, like great appliances, good ventilation, lots of storage… and then make it all look beautiful,” says the team.

So, are you up for a little DIY? Be sure to execute Bonnie, Lana and Erin’s tips for luxing up your laundry:

Invest in high-quality appliances

Invest in high-quality appliances

Three Birds Renovations love appliances which sit under the bench to maximise space, maximise the use of a bench and are visually pleasing too. In one of their most recent renovations, they chose the Electrolux 10kg UltimateCare System (EWF14013) and 9kg Heat Pump Condenser Dryer (EDH3896GDW) to meet the needs of a busy family of four who had loads of laundry!

Focus on feature handles and fixtures

Choose good quality tapware that will last for years. At House 10, the Three Birds Renovations team chose tumbled brass for a touch of bling, which also matches the brass cupboard pulls and door handles.

Choose tiles that make you smile

The laundry can be a good place to add a bit of fun and express your personality. It’s a good opportunity to choose tiles that are a little more out there than the rest of your house.

Follow the light

A window in a laundry always brightens up a small dark room! If it opens, it’s a great for extra ventilation and if not, at least you’ll get a view while you’re washing your smalls.

Don’t forget the styling!

Don’t forget the styling!

Greenery (fresh or faux) is always a great addition to a laundry, as is a beautiful smelling candle and soap. Laundry powder is never a great styling item and is best left hidden in the cupboard!
