The Astor Grill

The Astor Grill is an award-winning Hobart establishment which first opened its doors back in 1982. Little has changed since its opening, retaining classic formal decor and the great 10-strong steak menu offering variety. The Astor Grill team take pride in the locally sourced, fresh ingredients used. If you’re stuck on what to order, we recommend The Steak Astor ($52) which is a 200g aged, grass-fed, eye fillet served with blue cheese sauce and cheese crumbs. Plus, don’t forget to also check out their constantly changing wine menu too.

Ball & Chain Grill

If you’re looking for the best steak in Hobart, Ball & Chain Grill is a modern steakhouse that focuses on practicing traditional cooking methods. Located in an old sandstone warehouse, the restaurant has a large sample of meat and steak all cooked over a big charcoal fire. Steak is their specialty and each cut is carefully selected and aged. The menu offers some twists on the classics – we recommend trying the dry-aged Scotch Fillet with a side of Beer Battered Chips and Roasted Beets with walnut and goats cheese. One of the best steaks in Hobart in 2024!

Birdsong Restaurant

Once known as Beef and Seafood Grill, the now Birdsong Restaurant is considered as one of the best steakhouses in Hobart for a more casual and friendly setting. Here, they’re famed for serving up a delicious selection of Cape Grim sourced steak cuts, offering Porterhouse (300g), Scotch Fillet (300g) and Eye Fillet (250g) – all three which can be elevated with Birdsong’s mushroom, pepper, gravy, red wine & shallot butter or, our personal favourite, the herb & garlic butter. Plus, be sure to stick around and spoon your way through their Churros Banana Split.

Frank Restaurant is a modern and vibrant Argentinian steakhouse with gorgeous waterfront views and a menu designed for sharing. The Entrana ($51 / $98) inside skirt steak to share is a standout from their excellent grill menu, served rare and smokey with traditional chimichurri sauce and salsa picante. The cocktails are excellent and the wine list has plenty of variety between Australian and South American winemakers. A must try in 2024!
