Suckling pig, unique cocktails, and alfresco courtyard dining – Sydney’s newest Argentinian restaurant is firing up Balmain!

The masterminds behind two of Sydney’s most famed restaurants, Esteban and Tequila Mockingbird, has finally announced the arrival of the newest eatery based in Balmain, Casa Esquina.

This new Argentinian restaurant and bar, set to officially open their doors this Thursday 15 February 2024, is the latest offering from Atticus Hospitality, taking over the former Efendy site.

Offering a flavourful adventure for its guests, Casa Esquina sets itself apart thanks to its heavy focus of fire-cooked Argentinian food supercharged by head chef Will Quartel (previously Esteban and Tequila Mockingbird) and Atticus Hospitality Director, Michael Fegent.

After spending time cooking in the Australian outback over open flames, both Quartel and Fegent embarked on a three-week culinary adventure across Argentina in 2023, immersing themselves in the country’s rich history, cuisine and culture. Now, back in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, the duo authentically brought back the feelings and flavours of Argentina to Balmain.

Tucked along Elliott Street, Casa Esquina draws its main focal point to the two 80-year-old camphor laurel trees that grow through the balcony overlooking the courtyard. Although the charming alfresco area transports guests to the vineyards of Mendoza, making your way inside, the design focuses on light, earthy tones that represents the charisma of both the Andes and Australian outback.

Besides the mezzanine floor that houses the wine cellar that also doubles as a hidden private dining room, the star of the show is the open charcoal parrilla barbecue where, on Sundays, whole lambs and suckling pigs will be cooked for guests.

Casa Esquina’s menu features a premium array of steaks, fresh rolled pastas and unique Argentinian dishes such as Fugazzeta. On top of this, main highlights include the Wagyu Beed Tongue Pastrami, Sweet Bread and Prawn Paella, Black Garlic Pasta, Kangaroo and Maraschino Cherry Empanadas and, not to forget, Baby Pumpkin with Mushroom Risotto.

As for drinks, head sommelier Sophie Gitterle highlights Australian as well as Spanish, South American and Argentinian wine, working closely specialty South American importers. On top of their take of the Argentinian national drink, the Fernet-Branca and Coke with the Fernet Royale, the cocktail menu has been expertly crafted to take a nod to classics.

“Casa Esquina is a testament to the remarkable bones of the building, its beautiful courtyard and a salute to the lively community that surrounds it. Balmain is especially close to my heart – I’m a Balmain local, and my son goes to school here. I remember the old days when the area was pumping and I want to contribute to bringing that back – now is the time with Casa Esquina… There’s something for everyone!” says Fegent.
