First off, can we please thank Alan Brandy, the passionate founder of Gibbston Valley Winery – a man who saw such great potential in a cooler climate and has now created some of the world’s finest wine since the early 1980s. With a Cellar Door, fine dining restaurant, Wine Cave- including tours, Cheesery and biking hub to allow visitors to explore the winery and scenic surrounding trails, it’s easy to see why this is a popular International destination. Valli’s Estate Vineyard is a satisfyingly stunning and meticulous display of vines strictly planted at 4050 vines/ha and cropped at only 1kg/vine to ensure perfect ripeness. And the passionate precision doesn’t cease there – Valli Estate was the first vineyard in the valley to be planted in the true north-to-south direction, to maximise the amount of sunlight hours the vines receive, which contributes dramatically to the uniform ripening of fruit, a critical factor in Pinot Noir quality. They’ve even mastered their top soil levels with scrupulous measurements to ensure they are no thicker than .5 – 1m over free draining gravels to allow their vine roots to easily access water and nutrients. And boy does this perfection make a difference to their tantalising wines. Grant Taylor, the winery’s founder, has spent over 25 years perfecting his wine craft for a number of iconic wine producers in the Otago area, and since 1998 he has established the conscientious and beautifully crafted Valli Winery. Visitors are welcome to try an array of their delicious wines, however appointments are essential.
