Provenance Restaurant

Provenance, in Beechworth, North East Victoria, is located in the building that once was the Bank of Australasia. Built in 1856 at the height of the gold rush, the building is grand in design, and still reflects this today, even using the vault, which houses the wine cellar. Provenance has been an Age Good Food Guide two chef’s hat restaurant for the last nine years running and is No. 30 in the current  Gourmet Traveller Top 100 Australian Restaurants. The restaurant produces food that is contemporary in design with a focus on quality regional produce. Michael Ryan’s style is heavily influenced by his many trips to Japan.

As well as the lamb, the estate also produces honey, eggs and heritage citrus, keeping their motto as close to zero food miles as possible, and honouring the land they occupy.

Outdoor activities

What you do in Victoria’s High Country depends heavily on what time of year you choose to go. In winter, the region turns into a snow paradise, where skiing and snowboarding in Falls Creek or Mount Hotham is high on the agenda. In summer, the activities include exploring the Alpine National Park, horse riding trails galore, rock climbing, abseiling and caving. Of course, there is always taking in, riding around and strolling through the numerous picturesque towns, too. You want it, Victoria’s High Country has got it.

Explore the History

Victoria’s High Country is an interesting and history-filled place, and there are quite a few opportunities to take it all in. The region’s rich history includes the gold rush era, boasts many famous bush rangers and housed high country cattlemen.  You can visit the site of the Kelly Gang siege, learn about ‘Mad Dog’ Morgan and follow the brief but remarkable life of notorious bush ranger  Ned Kelly at the site of his last stand, Glenrowan. The Man From Snowy River fans can also get a kick from visiting Craig’s Hut, which was originally constructed as the set of the 1982 film.

The spa also offers indoor pool, gym, yoga and fitness classes, a sauna and an indoor spa. What could be nicer after a hard day of outdoor activities than to relax at a spa? Or, just to relax, period.

Staying at a winery? For us, that’s an immediate yes. Feathertop Winery is located in the Ovens Valley subregion near Bright because of its deep, red, well-drained soils, terraced soil profile and sub-alpine climate. Lucky for us, it’s extremely beautiful and to stay would be magical. There is the Mt Buffalo View Apartment and the Peggy Adelaide Suite. Both choices have optimal views, ultimate luxury and indulgence.
