Cockatoo Island in Sydney’s inner west is sharing a new way of escaping without having to escape. So if you’ve used up all your holidays or you don’t have enough spare time to take an interstate trip, this is your solution.
Launching today, Thursday February 8, alongside Cockatoo Island’s already famous camping grounds, is Contained, an activity hub formed through the use of innovative structures, materials and art. It’s pop up food and beverage and boutique accommodation all squeezed into shipping containers.
The concept was first laid out in Fremantle, Western Australia, and was created by Anatoly Mezhov and Irene Polo who are both excited to bring their concept to the opposite side of Australia.
“It’s an opportunity for people to escape to Cockatoo Island to experience great food, innovative farming & bespoke converted container structures, unwind and explore the Island’s incredible cultural and historical features,” Anatoly said.
And what is this great food, you ask? Well, it’s Don Tapa of course.
Combining South American and traditional Australian produce, the food is expected to excite, satisfy & impress as it fuses unique intercontinental Indigenous flavours. Powered by the onsite Urban Farm, the dishes are served in a style that is designed to be shared with great company. And if selecting from the Latin Street Eats, Grilled Veg and Meats or the Cheese and Charcuterie selection is too hard, let Don feed your group with a set shared style menu for $60 per person.
But what about beverages to match with this mouthwatering food? Well, The Urban Winery’s Alex Retief has curated a selection of NSW-sourced wines showcasing some amazing wine regions that have been flying under the radar. Or perhaps you fancy a brew? Well, the team from Young Henry’s will be serving up their iconic Newtowner and Summer Hop Ale as well as an exclusive taste of their all-new Stayer Session Ale on tap. In addition, Archie Rose Distillery has also joined forces with Contained and will feature a selection of boutique spirits.
And while you come for the mouthwatering food and beverages, you are also welcome to stay the night in their luxury shipping container suites. They feature a queen-sized bed, air conditioning, an exterior deck with lounge furniture, access to the Don Tapa Restaurant, room service and a container plunge pool, all matched with the picturesque beauty of Cockatoo Island.
