Here we are in Sydney complaining about winter blues – it’s 19 degrees outside. Meanwhile in Melbourne the temperature’s struggling to hit above 15 degrees… While the two cities may not have weather in common, we do share one delicious trait – foodie heaven.

Melbourne is still ‘full winter’ and battling icy cold winds, heavy rain and all the messy hair a girl can handle. Any sane human will tell you, when you’re tired, cold and wet, you can’t help but gravitate towards food; and that’s exactly what we’re doing. Local sea-side hotspot, Pontoon, is serving up tasty and warming pizzas straight from their wood-fired oven. Hand stretched bases come with four different classic toppings. If your soul is still in need of warming this Winter, we recommend the Rabbit Gnocchi from Fatto Bar and Cantina. Gippsland farmed rabbits are braised with caramelised shallots, roasted chicken stock and marsala before being mixed with house made parmaesan gnocci, roquette pesto and walnuts. Heaven.

It’s hard to create a Melbourne food list and not include Neptune. The culinary heaven is once again, crushing it. Our pick of Winter Warmers would have to be the Half Roast Chicken, with Dauphinoise Potatoes, green beans and Jus. Pair it with a glass of the 2013 Scala Ciro and you’re on for a winner.

Hanoi Hannah

And last but by no means least, why not winter-fy yourself at Hanoi Hannah? There really are too many options but we can never go past the caramelised tamarind Pork Hock, the tender beef pho with brisket broth, thai basil, coriander and spring onion; and the banh bo-nuts… We literally cannot pick a winner.
