Whether you truly want to learn something new or just enjoy a great day with the special people in your life, masterclasses make the best experiences.
There are masterclasses on just about everything, but we’re focusing on the best ones for food and drink. Whether you want to learn the requirements for mixing the perfect gin or discover the secret to making mouth-watering arancini balls, our list has all the cool masterclasses going on around Sydney. We’ve separated them between “food” and “drink” for your ease of reading. So, wash those hands and let’s get started!
Salt Meats Cheese
Your cooking will look bellissimo at this wonderful establishment in Circular Quay. At Salt Meats Cheese, you can unravel the mystery behind Italian-style cooking, including why all those nonna’s are very particular about ingredients. Become a pizza whizz, make cheese by hand or discover the secret to rolling mouth-watering arancini balls while matching it with a glass of Aperol Spritz. And we cannot forget to mention their pasta-making classes, where you can learn the difference between fettucine, ravioli and tortellini.
Zushi School Masterclass
Zushi is a Japanese restaurant located in both Surry Hills and Barangaroo, who will bring their skills to a one-night-only masterclass on Saturday, 24 August. Zushi School is a two-hour hands-on sushi rolling course, teaching you the basics from how to select the right fish at the fish markets to filleting fish at home. You’ll also get a sushi-rolling mat and recipe booklets to take home with you. And best of all, when the class finishes, you get to eat all the sushi you’ve made with a complimentary beverage.
The Cornersmith Picklery is a small culinary school located in south Marrickville, which teaches day classes on some of the more unique stuff. This cooking school specialises in everything from jams to larder, BBQ’s and even how to cook a whole chook, as well as online courses for those who really need to learn something but don’t have much time to spare. Their calendar is filled every weekend with esoteric masterclasses to teach you something different.
The Sydney Chocolate School
Chocolate is a wonderful treat to eat, but few us know how it’s made. Well, now you can learn all the ins and outs at The Sydney Chocolate School, from hand tempering on marble bench tops and forming unique chocolate statues or chocolate-laden treats. And, as with most of our other classes, you can stuff yourself silly on all the chocolate you make. It’s your creation, so you’re allowed!
Sydney Seafood School
The Sydney Seafood School is perfectly located at the Sydney Fish Market, offering an assortment of classes where you can learn new recipes and bond with like-minded people. All classes include a live cooking demonstration as well as hands-on cooking experience and dining with a glass of wine. Classes range from preparing crab to make Singapore’s famous chilli crab, to barbecue Thai squid salad. Once cooking is done, head over to the casual dining room for lunch or dinner.
The Hop + Grain Brew Store
The inner west of Sydney is fast becoming a brewery haven, with nearly a dozen breweries supplying the local bars. At The Hop + Grain Brew Store, you can learn skills to tackle the new market, or to simply make your own batches at home. Whether you seek the basics or something advanced, or even if you want to know how cider is made, you’ll find something for your wild mind here. When you’ve learned it all, head into their store and get your own starter kit to do it all at home.
Urban Winery Sydney
Perhaps wine is a little more up your alley? Well, with the Urban Winery Sydney, you don’t have to travel into the country to learn about this grape concoction. They provide classes on wine blending, wine tasting and product knowledge. In their wine blending session ($150pp), groups of four are tasked to blend their own batch, with the winner chosen by everyone involved. And if you really like the blend you’ve made, you can order a dozen of them with your own personalised label.
When it comes to learning about gin, who better to teach it than Archie Rose? They’ve grown so quickly to become a signature staple for Sydney. In their popular Blend Your Own Gin class, you will learn the history of the famed mother’s ruin (as they used to call it) and then blend your own gin from all that knowledge. Each guest will leave the class with a 200mL bottle of their own unique gin, as well as a bit more knowledge on the spirit. Archie Rose is currently dabbling in whisky, so you can also undertake a Blend Your Own Whisky class too.
Dulcie's Cocktail Masterclasses
We’ve gone through the beer, wine and spirits, but now it’s time to learn the art of mixing drinks. So why not do it in a crafty prohibition-era bar? Dulcie’s in Kings Cross have some master cocktail makers who will lead you through the art of shaking, stirring and mixing cocktails; whether it’s their own signatures or popular bar staples. Each of the four classes they teach includes canapes to keep you fine and dandy while you work the instruments. When you finish, hang around with your classmates for a round or two.
The Sydney Mixologists
If ever you’re looking for a master cocktail maker for your next house party or “work” conference, The Sydney Mixologists are the perfect choice. But as well as providing services for cocktail fanatics, they also run classes for discerning tipplers. Their classes are mobile, too, which means that The Sydney Mixologists can come to you. While getting someone else to do all the work is great, we think it’s better to impress your friends and family at your next party by making these cocktails yourself.
