World Champagne Day: The Top 3 Fizz

It’s always a happy day when you can celebrate something you love. Especially when that something you love, is pure gold. Filled with bubbles. Usually in a bottle and goes off with a bang. That something you love is champagne.

Today marks World Champagne Day, a celebration of the ‘celebration-alcohol’, giggle-juice, bubbles! The day conveniently coincides with the Spring Racing calendar, making this guide your bible for the next few months. So prepare yourselves bubbly-lovers, here’s our guide to the top 3 fizz’s to try this World Champagne Day and to keep around for the Spring calendar – time to pop some corks, it is Friday after all…

Top of the Tops: Dom Pérignon

Our beloved Wine Hunter is a little bias here, as he was once a loyal employee of Moet Hennessy – however, it does not get much better than the Dom. One of the most recognisable bottles and labels in the wine world and synonymous with excellence and luxury, Dom Pérignon has never let us down. The story of champagne begins with Dom Pérignon, a Benedictine monk who lived in Hautvillers in the Champagne region of France from 1638 to 1715. He was instrumental in the development of Champagne as a wine style. Story has it, that when Dom Pérignon first created his delicious bubbly champagne, he called out to his fellow monks “Come quickly, I am tasting the stars!”. This King of Champagnes has a balance and refinement that stops you in your tracks. Your mind goes blank while the pure pleasure of the super fine beads and all their flavours flow across your palate and take you to your “happy place”.

Flavour Overload: Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve NV

One of our very favourite Non Vintage Champagnes. We’re big on flavour and when the big flavour is perfectly balanced with the elegance of champagne, it’s likely you’ll be loving every mouthful. The Heidsieck Maison was establish in 1851 and has long been a winemaker of the highest regard. This champagne has up to 40% reserve wine from older vintages, which drives to wonderful richness of flavour. The wine has distinctive baked pastry and apricot aromas. However, it is the richness of flavour in the mouth which is balanced by limey yet creamy bubbles, that makes this champagne sing. A real pleasure to drink and one you can purchase here.

Pink and Perfect: Laurent Perrier Brut Rose NV

Freshly picked raspberries, black cherries and strawberries, all wrapped up in a freshly baked pastry and topped with a rich double cream. That’s what you get with this extraordinary bottle of fizz. A lot of top roses from Champagne are regarded as the cream of the crop. The best wines in the range. Laurent Perrier Brut Rose is exactly that, but is not priced out of reach. You will always see the winemaker/sommelier types helping themselves to this champagne at any opportunity they can. It has the richer elements of Rose, with the riper red fruit flavours, while being balanced by a crisp apple freshness. This makes it dangerously easy to drink.
