TOP 6 LICKS: BEST GELATO IN PERTH
You simply can’t go past a fresh scoop of Gelato in a waffle cone.
And that’s because it’s the perfect treat to tick all your summer cravings; something cold, something sweet and something crunchy. We’ve endured the relentless task of scooping, licking, biting and taste-testing as many gelato scoops Perth has to offer. After the deliciously arduous task we’ve finally created our top six picks that you’ll need to devour asap in the sunny city of Perth.
Gusto Gelato is the little Bologna of Perth – the gelato is seriously that good! With all gelato handcrafted from scratch, the team behind Gusto Gelato create small fresh batches using traditional artisan production techniques to create the perfect scoop of gelato. With 20 flavours to choose from you’ll be sure to find your dream flavour. And for those of us who are Nutella fiends, you’ll be glad to hear there’s Nutella on tap. Repeat, on tap. We recommend trying the Gusto – roasted peanut gelato with a chocolate fudge ripple and chunks of chocolate fudge brownie – how could you say no?! If peanut isn’t your thing, don’t worry you’ve got delicious choices like Pistachio (made from in house pistachio paste) or the Strawberry and Dark Chocolate – fresh strawberry gelato with dark chocolate chips.
Another absolute standout is Pietro Gelateria, but this time this is the little Sicoly of Perth. Founded by a third generation Sicilian, the gelateria implements the art of artisanal gelato taught in Italy to ensure authentic and creamy gelato. The menu here is ever changing, meaning you’ll always have something new to try! Or if you’ve found your flavour you can change up the way you devour it – either in a cone, cup, frozen onto a stick or piped into a cannoli, could it get any better?! If the gelato still hasn’t quenched your summer needs you must try the housemade Sicilian Granita, made with real seasonal fruit or coffee. Right now we’re here for the sensational goodness of gelato, so we recommend the Pistachio, Mint Stracciatella or Ricotta, Orange & Dark Chocolate. For our vegan readers, you’ll love the Dark Chocolate Sorbetto, an intense chocolate fix to satisfy all!
It may look like one of Perth’s trendy bars, however instead of a liquor stained marble top you’ll find a vibrant and varied palette of gelato and sorbet with 20 flavours on rotation! The moody blue gelateria is sprinkled with colourful neon and silver inspired ’80’s Devo-esque’ gelato lids. But what we’re here to talk about are the sensational flavours hidden under those dishes. All the gelato is churned daily and all made from the freshest ingredients to ensure the greatest gelato possible. With new wave flavours and concoctions on offer it’s hard to say what to pick! However, we wanted to highlight new flavours that include Burnt Butter Popcorn, Green Tea Toasted Rice, Malted Milk Cornflake Cookie and Avocado Candied Bacon. Dessert lovers, brace yourselves – on top of delectable gelato there are limited edition desserts baked in-house and a free flowing chocolate tap. That’s all the fresh chocolate you could ask for.
JERSEY JACK GELATO
Thought gelato could only be inspired by Italy? Think again. Jersey Jack Gelato originated in Kuala Lumpur and has since graced Western Australia. The quirky gelateria still pays homage to Italy by using traditional Italian artistry and use of the freshest ingredients possible to make their drool-worthy scoops. You can also feel extra good about your sweet treat as all key ingredients such as milk, cream, sugars, fruit and nuts are all purchased from local farmers and retailers. Jersey Jack Gelato uses only fresh milk produced by Jersey Cow’s hence the name and delicious taste! Another highlight is the hidden ‘secret garden’ outdoor seating you can relax in whilst licking away at your gelato. With ever changing flavours there are endless decisions to be made, however you can’t go past their signature Coconut gelato! If you’re feeling adventurous? Then we dare you to try the Durian gelato, which is so special it’s only available Friday through to Sunday.
They don’t stop at delicious traditional gelato. It’s soft serve gelato. Oh and there’s Unicorn Ice Cream and Mermaid Gelato. Curious? So were we and we weren’t disappointed. The Italian family business first opened in Subiaco in 2014, however stems back from a small town in Italy called Aosta. Their mission is to handcraft tasty and creative gelato based desserts using family recipes and the bets raw ingredients. They make all their add ons like meringues, sauce and toppings in house to ensure total perfection. The team behind Whisk Creamery make it all from soft serve gelato, to cronut gelato sandwiches, waffles, gourmet milkshakes and ice-cream fish cones complete with unicorn horns! We recommend the Belgian Chocolate, Mango & Passionfruit Sorbet (Vegan), Salted Caramel and Uji Matcha Green Tea! And definitely grab a crunchy fish cone – simply for the novelty!
THE MILK BARREL
The Milk Barrel is a crowd favourite and why wouldn’t it be?! Having won awards for their small batch artisanal gelato which is handcrafted from scratch, you know you’re in for a special treat. With new and exotic flavours continually popping up you’ll never be short of something different. The team at Milk Barrel are definitely not afraid to shake things up, and they truly understand what their customers want – wine infused gelato anyone?! For those of us who enjoy a drink or two we highly recommend the Barossa Shiraz or Italian Prosecco, or if you’re more of a spirits person the Bourbon Pecan Pie or Mojito Sorbet. For the traditionalists out there, you haven’t been forgotten; try their sensational Honey and Thyme or Earl Grey Tea flavours.
