The Best of the Best: Good Food Month Turns 20
This October, Sydney Good Food Month will celebrate 20 years of unforgettable food and events. No surprises here, the month will be a flavour-packed, talent-filled program, shining the light on influential chefs and restaurants that have played crucial roles in helping shape Australia’s culinary platform.
The line-up of events is so big the month is almost not enough. If you were planning to kick start your summer-body diet in October, don’t.
We’ve shortlisted where we’ll be heading during the 20th-birthday-extravaganza; we highly recommend you follow suit and make October the month of all months, the month of Good Food.
So here’s what you can’t miss:
Hyde Park Palms
From October 4-21, Hyde Park will host the custom-made Palm Springs-inspired pop-up restaurant. The venue will play host to kitchen masters such as Neil Perry, Bill Granger, Christine Manfield, Stephanie Alexander and Ross Lusted. Dinners will be hosted by hotly-tipped international talent – Italy’s Isabella Potì and LA’s Jason Neroni. There’ll be pumping nineties and noughties lunches with Andy Bowdy, Victor Liong, Mitch Orr and Kate Reid; a celebration of Australia’s women of culinary influence, a flavour- packed Pasta Battle, and Vegan Italian feast.
Date Night with Ume Burger
It’s no secret we love a burger, and like most people – we love a good date night. Grab your better half and settle in for the perfect evening. 10 Things I Hate About You will be screening while you’re happily chowing down on Kerby Craig’s Ume Burger, a side of fries and ice-cream from the legends at Cow & The Moon. There’s also plenty of Dutch Courage floating around, just in case of first date nerves.
90's Long Lunch
Full of retro and nostalgia, legendary pastry chef Andy Bowdy and innovative chef Victor Liong will bring forth a menu of quintessentially ’90s dishes. Each dish had a huge influence on both chefs’ lives, and are being recreated with their own individual twist. Tickets include the long lunch with Brand’s Laira wine and James Squire beer – and a killer ’90s playlist.
The Masters Series
Join legendary master chefs Bill Granger, Stephanie Alexander, Ross Lusted and Neil Perry as they explore the most influential dishes, menus and cookbooks from the last twenty years. Ticket price includes a three course dinner with matching Brand’s Laira wine and beer supplied by James Squire. We’re yet to decide which one to go to… Is it greedy if we do all 4?
Chef and Owner of LA’s iconic Rose Cafe in Venice Beach, Jason Neroni, will grace Sydney with his Southern California cuisine for the first time. Neroni will be joined in the kitchen by Sydney legend Monty Koludrovic, Head Chef of Icebergs Dining Room and Bar. A chill and uber cool match made in kitchen heaven.
Culinary Women of Influence
Celebrate some of Australia’s top culinary women with a three-course dinner created by Alia Glorie (Head Chef of hatted Perth spot, Billie H), Alanna Sapwell (Saint Peter, Sydney), and Karena Armstrong (The Salopian Inn). The event will be hosted by Sydney favourite Momofuku Seiobo and their talented GM, Kulie Javier-Ashton. You’ll find us here with our own HB Culinary Women of Influence – does it count if they only eat the food, not cook it?
And for our Vegan friends, you’ve got nothing to fear. The brains behind cult Vegan restaurant Smith & Daughters, Shannon Martinez, will bring mouth-watering, authentic Italian dishes to life – vegan style. Martinez will bring her plant-based dining experience to the month with an Italian feast you’ll never forget.
Night Noodle Markets
Kicking off on the 4th of October, Night Noodle Markets return and boy are we wildly excited. Sydney will be chock-a-block with smells, sights and sounds of over 40 sizzling stalls for a whopping 18 nights. Think foodie treats courtesy of Gelato Messina, Hoy Pinoy, Mr Bao, Waffleland, Donut Papi, Puffle, Black Star Pastry, Grumpy G’s Kitchen, N2 Extreme Gelato, Chur Burger and Thai Riffic – just to name a few. For the first time, as celebration of the 20th birthday, some of Sydney’s top chefs and restaurants will be showcasing their best in a rotating stall.
