While some of us complain about Australia stealing American public holidays, the rest of us will be bathing our tastebuds in tasty Mexican cuisine.

Cinco de Mayo is a wild fiesta that is traversing the globe. Technically, it’s an annual celebration of the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla. But while the historical significance is important to the US and Mexico, we’re just here for the tasty food and drinks. Oh, and the crazy parties!

Sydney, get ready to rock your tastebuds with some truly authentic Mexican classics, laden among some unique dishes and liquor concoctions. Follow along to see the best restaurants and bars which will help you celebrate Cinco de Mayo and all things Mexico. De nada!

El Camino Cantina

It would be rather silly for El Camino Cantina to miss Cinco de Mayo! The cantina in The Rocks will be throwing a wonderful soirée on May 5, featuring Mexican-inspired DJs and complimentary chips and salsa. The dining section will host a chilli-eating competition from 7pm, and there’ll be a piñata to whack at 8pm. El Camino Amigos (members) will receive a free margarita upon entry. And at both Manly and The Rocks, try out their Bloody Mary Rita (only available Sunday 05 May)!

Nighthawk Diner

Executive chef, Alistair Fogg and the team have introduced a limited-edition taco and cocktail menu, which will run for the week leading up to May 5. Try the Baja fish taco, served with Baja spiced mahi-mahi with coriander slaw, guajillo tequila salsa and fresh jalapenos. As for cocktails, have a sip on the New Mexican Paloma, made with tequila, grapefruit soda and lime. If you’re after something a little heartier give the new sandwiches a try.

Head down to Manly Wharf Hotel for a waterside Cinco de Mayo party. There are mini Patron margaritas for $12; crispy chicken and tempura fish tacos for $5 each; and a special nacho pizza with beef, guacamole, sour cream and corn chips for $20. Kick on into the early hours with local DJs Brad Mullens and Dollar Cub spinning tunes. No siestas here!
