Get your Greek on.

Greek Independence Day is March 25, and commemorates the beginning of the War of Greek Independence in 1821.

If you’re looking for somewhere to celebrate Greek Independence Day (or to just eat some fantastic food), you could do no better than 1821, a restaurant nestled on Pitt Street, at the very heart of the CBD, – aptly named after the year of Greek Independence.

1821 is offering a stunning seven-course set menu with accompanying wines to celebrate Independence Day in true style. The menu is being prepared by the Executive Chef, David Tsirekas, and the legendary Greek chef Janni Kyritsis, who was recently awarded the Vittoria Coffee Legend award as part of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide Awards 2016, for his long-term commitment to influencing and improving the food and hospitality industry.

The Greek cuisine spectacular begins with Koulouria Thessaloniki – a sesame bread served with olive oil, olive paste, aged feta, tomato and Island Rigani – and Oysters with avgolemono cream, paired with a Chandon Brut. It continues with Tomato Keftethes accompained by 2015 Thema Paavlides Estate Sauvignon Blanc, then Filo Pie with an olive and garlic filling, paired with a Vidiano from Crete.

The Baccaliaro Salted Cod with walnut, bitter greens and an orange and honey vinaigrette will be paired with a Gaia Ritinitis Bobikis. There is also Lamb Kleftiko with roasted quince and cucumber salad, paired with a 2013 Alpha Aixia.

The menu concludes with Greek petit fours including lavender and lemon granita, Melamakorona, and more traditional Greek delicacies, accompanied with a Muscat Blanc.

All in all, it promises to be a tantalising trip for your taste buds, straight to the heart of Greece.

The menu is $220 per person, and will prove to be an experience to remember.
