Australia’s Most Expensive Whisky Flight
How much would you pay for a whisky flight? The cost of an aeroplane flight?
Well, if you’re ready to splash some cash on four of the oldest and rarest American whiskeys, look no further than Sydney’s very own NOLA Smokehouse and Bar.
In late November 2019, the Barangaroo whisky haven released Australia’s most expensive whisky flight, The Old and Rare Flight, that will set back tasters a mere $850.
Containing four samples of some of America’s oldest and rarest whiskeys that have a collective bottle value of over $19,000, you’ll be left feeling jet-lagged if you don’t savour every last drop of the flight.

WhistlePig The Boss Hog IV “The Black Prince”: The fourth release from WhistlePig’s The Boss Hog line is a dedication to the great spirits of Europe. This straight rye has been aged in armagnac casks from France for 14 years, resulting in an exceptionally long finish with notes of burnt sugar, toasted marshmallows, dried fruits and a gentle oak spice.
Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23-Year-Old: The oldest of the Pappy Van Winkle bourbon releases in Australia, this was first released in 1998 and today, only 75 bottles are shipped to our country each year – making it one of the most sought-after bottles of whiskey in the country.
Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash 2016 Edition: This is the second release of Michter’s Celebration Sour Mash, after the first, which was released in 2013. This blended American whiskey was released by the outgoing master distiller Willie Pratt as his swan-song whiskey. He worked as a master distiller for 33 years and to celebrate his retirement, he selected five barrels containing exceptional whiskey ranging from 10 years to over 30 years in age. Of the 256 bottles produced, only four made their way to Australia. And of that four, only three survived.
Old Fashioned Copper “O.F.C” 1990 Edition: Only one barrel of this whiskey was produced and of the 63 bottles available world-wide, NOLA Smokehouse and Bar has the only one bottle in the Southern Hemisphere. Produced by Buffalo Trace, one of the world’s most awarded distilleries, this straight bourbon whiskey was aged for 28 years.
The team at NOLA comment on The Old and Rare Flight by saying that the experience is a salute to these master distillers behind the four drops who have not only concocted marvellous drops but are internationally recognised in whisky history.
“Some whiskey isn’t about the spirit in the bottle, some whiskey is about the experience. It’s not very often we get to sample a piece of history but in this flight, we have strived to collect some of the rarest American whiskeys currently available in the world to offer a once in a lifetime experience.”
Of course, if you’d rather sip on a more affordable nip (and save the money from the flight for an actual overseas flight), NOLA Smokehouse and Bar Barangaroo is home to over 600 American whiskeys from their impressive 13-page menu dedicated specifically to the much-loved tipple.
