All The Weird And Wonderful Looks From The 2018 Met Gala

If you know anything important, you’d know that the first Monday of May means only one thing: The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala.

AKA the night where the world’s biggest stars dress up to a theme and pose on the steps of the Met. This year, the likes of Rihanna, Anna Wintour, and the Kardashian-Jenner clan have donned their Sunday best in accordance with the Costume Institute exhibit’s theme ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’.

For those of us not holy enough to be in such presence, it is also the night we sit by our computers waiting to get a glimpse of the divine. So from one mere mortal to another, here’s our round up of looks, from the wonderful to the just plain weird.

The Wonderful

Blake Lively in Atelier Versace

All hail the OG queen of the Met steps. Blake nailed the brief with a richly embellished burgundy dress with an embroidered skirt fit for a medieval queen.

Selena Gomez in Coach

Selena stunned in a tiered, subtly embellished gown, with Coach Creative Director Stuart Veuvers on her arm.

Rihanna in Maison Margiela

We can always count on Rihanna to make a statement on the red carpet, and as co-chair of this year’s gala, expectations were high. The verdict: move over Francis, there’s a new Pope in town.

Anna Wintour in Chanel

The Queen of fashion herself, Anna Wintour, arrived looking angelic in the custom Chanel dress of our dreams.

Ariana Grande in Vera Wang

Donning a floaty cherub-covered pastel corset gown, Ariana was clearly paying attention to one of life’s more important lessons: you don’t alter Vera Wang to fit you, you alter yourself to fit Vera!

Emily Ratajkowski in Marc Jacobs

In a sleek gold gown, the newlywed opted for a more subtle take on the theme.

Winnie Harlow in Tommy Hilfiger

Two words: that. headpiece.

Dripping in gold. This woman can do no wrong.

Co-ordinating with sister Gigi, Bella rocked the sinner half of saints and sinners in a glossy latex corset with structural cape and slick updo.

Hailee Steinfeld in Prabal Gurung

In her eighth appearance at a Met Gala at only 21 years old, Hailee proved she knew exactly what she’s doing in an angelic white gown.

Practically glowing in gold gown and actual halo.

Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen in The Row

Tbh, this theme was made with these two in mind.

Kylie Jenner in Alexander Wang

The new mum arrived in a cut-out black gown and angular sunglasses, just three months after giving birth. Slay.

The Weird

Zendaya in Versace

Straight out of the medieval age, chain mail and all.

Madonna in  Jean Paul Gaultier

Whilst we’re not sure the Vatican would approve with a repertoire including ‘Like a Virgin’, ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ and ‘Like a Prayer’, Madonna totally owned the theme in a JPG gothic dress, complete with ornate gold crown and black netted veil.

Cara Delevingne in Dior

Cara managed to be totally covered up and totally bare all at once, and we’re not sure how we feel about it.

Frances McDormand in Valentino

Whether you’re a fan of her blue gown and matching headpiece, there’s no denying that Frances looked fierce on Monday night.

Katy Perry in Versace

Never one to go subtle, Katy turned up in her best Victoria’s Secret Angel impression.

Shailene Woodley in Ralph Lauren

Whilst we’re not quite sure about this look, one thing is for sure: she certainly nailed the brief with her knight in shining armour turned Joan of Arc number.

Lana Del Rey & Jared Leto in Gucci

Lana opted for long black hair extensions and a medieval-style gown with literal knives poking into a gold heart on her chest, whilst Jared just went full on Jesus. Iconic.

Phew! We’re exhausted from just looking at all that ‘faaar-shun’. Until next year!
