The Hunter’s Weekend of Sports – 22 May
Tips, Tricks, Picks and Odds.
Sports are back. So is The Hunter.
With the current tide of the COVID-19 pandemic slowly receding, certain restrictions are starting to finally ease. The pubs and cafés are reopening, people are heading back to work, and – most importantly – sport leagues around the world are implementing their return.
Unfortunately for the avid sports fan, it’s still early days. The NRL isn’t back on until next week, with the AFL a few weeks later. And as for our friend abroad, American sport seems like a distant dream and English football seems to be in a similar category.
With that being said, some leagues are feeling confident enough to restart their seasons, and us sports fans are grateful for a bit of action to whet the palate. The UFC is back up and running, Bundesliga kicked off again last week, and footy (NRL) is just around the corner. Sports are back baby.
So, as sports return, so too do I – your tipping Messiah.
This is the Hunter’s Easter Sunday. I have returned.
And I am more ready than ever for the weekend ahead.
As always in this column, I’ll explore what Australians can look forward to in this weekend of sports – focusing on a different sport for each day – and provide the tips that I feel most confident in based on my research, analysis and expert intuition.
Friday – KBL
The Korean Baseball League is a seriously underrated affair. The atmosphere is usually electric, the stadiums opulent, and the standard up there with the best. Starting the action on Friday is an interesting matchup between two teams who’ve started the tournament with different fortunes.
Doosan Bears v Samsung Lions
Doosan enter this game with an 8-6 record and fourth place on the table. A win tonight has the potential to shoot them up to second, off the back of a difficult series against league-leader NC Dinos. They’re due to face the worst team in the league (by miles) SK after this series against Samsung, so a sweep here could set them on a trajectory to solidifying themselves as contenders for the top spot.
Now, Samsung won’t be beaten easily. They sit with a 5-10 record, but have already faced seriously challenging competition, and they always manage to put runs on the board.
This will be a closer game than most think, but in the end, I do believe the better side will take it out. Doosan to win.
The Hunter’s Hot Tip: Doosan Bears to Win
Saturday – Bundesliga
The first of the major football leagues to return, Bundesliga has satiated the appetites of football fans around the globe, and they’ve set up an absolute blinder of a matchup for our Saturday night.
Borussia Dortmund v Wolfsburg
It’s tight at the top of the table. Unlike the EPL, only four points separate first and second, with only two more to cross for third. Borussia Dortmund will be looking to pick up every possible point they can, especially against the tougher opponents. Whether they are as strong at home without the ultras in the wall remains to be seen, but this match against Wolfsburg could be crucial to their title hopes.
Wolfsburg come into this game in the hunt to make quick ground. They currently sit in 6th, but a sizeable 11 points behind Leverkusen in 5th. They need points, and they need them fast. If they can even come away with one point against Dortmund, they’ll see it as a success.
So, with Wolfsburg likely playing for the draw, and Dortmund uncertain in new conditions without their adoring fans, I think the result might just surprise the pundits. I expect Wolfsburg to push early, then park the bus after a score. My prediction is a hard fought, but ultimately inconsequential, draw.
The Hunter’s Hot Tip: Draw
Sunday – Bundesliga (Again)
I know, I’m covering two Bundesliga matches in the one piece. But, for now, there really isn’t much more on. And this game is bound to be spectacular.
Bayern Munich v Eintracht Frankfurt
Now, I’m not necessarily covering this game because I expect it to be close. Bayern are the top team in the league and Frankfurt are caught in a relegation battle. However, I’m certain that this will be a fun game to watch, and there’ll be goals galore.
Despite sitting in 13th, Frankfurt have scored more goals than anyone outside the top 5, and Bayern’s goal difference is ten more than that of Dortmund in second. With a triumphant return to home for Bayern, and great attacking prowess for both sides, I expect this match to see goal after goal after goal.
Ultimately, Bayern will walk away with the win, but there’ll be plenty of fun to be had on the way.
The Hunter’s Hot Tip: Multi Bayern win + o3.5 Goals
