Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition- The embodiment of fine Japanese whisky

Recently, Hunter & Bligh had the exquisite privilege of meeting Mike Miyamoto the global brand ambassador for Suntory Whisky.

Sydney’s Simmer on the Bay at Dawes Point, was decked out in true Japanese form as they hosted the evenings celebration of fine creation.

Mr Miyamoto travelled to Australia, all the way from the Yamazaki distillery in Japan to celebrate the launch of the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition & showcase the award-winning Suntory Japanese whisky portfolio.

It is understood the original Suntory blenders began small scale experiments, blending with Mizunara during World War II. Although only found in a few regions within Japan, it wasn’t the rarity of the tree, but the hard, porous nature of its wood, which presented the greatest challenge for the distillery. The wood’s high moisture content and hard structure meant liquid could seep through its permeable structure and that’s once the difficulty of shaping it into the ideal cask, as overcome.

But the minimum 18 year maturation process involved in developing the Yamazaki whisky, gives the limited edition an incomparable depth and flavour that lingers long after the first sip.

“I wanted to reveal the whisky’s soul; the art of Mizunara – a heightened sense and awakened palate, engaged through aromas and flavours never known before. Encountering it should be a moment of epiphany,” said Suntory’s Fourth Chief Blender, Shinji Fukuyo.

With a rich elegant fragrance of aloe wood and cinnamon, the notes leave a condensed sweetness and silky texture of dried fruits, coconut and orange marmalade on the palate. A spiciness lingers with this unique, dramatic and unforgettable whisky.

Presented in a beautiful wooden box crafted from recycled Suntory casks, the Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition is exclusively available from select retailers and on-premise venues now. At $14,00.00, there are only 5000 bottles available globally.
